COVID-19: New Visa Application Information for Spouses and Children of Japanese Citizens and Permanent Residents

The following information for new visa applications for Spouses/Children of Japanese Nationals, Permanent Residents, and Long Term Residents applies as of the 2nd of November.

Spouses/Children of Japanese Nationals

1.    You can apply for Japanese Spouse visa if you have a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) as a Japanese Spouse. 
2.    If you have another category’s CoE, you can apply for the visa appropriate to your CoE. You must also provide a family register proving your status as a spouse or child of a Japanese national (an original or a copy of koseki tohon).
3.    If you don’t have a CoE, you can apply for Temporary Visitor Visa.
You must provide a family register as above (an original or a copy of koseki tohon).

 Spouses/Children of Permanent Residents

1.    You can apply for a Spouse visa if you obtain a CoE as a Spouse of Permanent Resident.
If you have another category’s CoE, you can apply for the visa appropriate to your CoE. You must provide the Residence card (zairyu card) or Certificate of Residence of your family member. 
2.    If you don’t have a CoE and want to stay in Japan long-term, please obtain a CoE first. For short term stay (up to 90 days), you can apply for Temporary Visitor Visa. You must provide the Residence card (zairyu card) or Certificate of Residence of your family member.

Spouses/Children of Long-Term Resident whose family is staying in Japan and who have been separated from their family

1.    If you have a CoE, you can apply for the visa appropriate to your CoE. 
2. If you don’t have a CoE and you want to stay in Japan for a longer period, please obtain a CoE first. For short term stay (up to 90 days), you can apply for a Temporary Visitor Visa. You must provide the Residence card (zairyu card) or Certificate of Residence of your family member.  
 

For all applications:

Please bring:

1. Your passport and a copy of your passport photo page
2. A completed visa application form with a passport photo attached
3. If you are applying with a CoE, please bring it along with a copy of the CoE.

Quarantine in Japan (Self-Isolation)

After entering Japan you must self-isolate at home or a hotel for a period of 14 days.
You must not use any kind of mass or public transport (taxi, domestic flights, ferry, bus, train etc.) during your self-isolation or to get to the place where you will self-isolate.
Please use a private car (your family may pick you up) or a rental car.

Leaving Australia as an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident
If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Australia, you will require an exemption from the Australian government to travel. Please see here for details. If you are normally a resident in another country (i.e. Japan), you may not require an exemption, but we recommend you check directly with the Department of Home Affairs on their COVID-19 Hotline at 1800 020 080 or their immigration information line at 131 881.
