37th JET Programme Pre-Departure Reception
2023/7/27

On July 20, a Pre-Departure Reception was held at the Consul-General’s Official Residence in honour of the 15 new participants from Western Australia who will be departing Perth at the end of this month to take up their postings on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme.
Approximately 100 guests, including members of the WA Parliament, Japanese and Australian business community, and a large number of former JET participants here in WA, gathered to help us cheer on the new participants. The JET Programme began in 1987, and right from the beginning has seen over 540 participants from WA go to Japan. We even had one of the first WA participants from 1987 attend the reception.
Following the opening remarks (here) from Consul-General NAITO, The Hon Matthew Swinbourn MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General; Minister for Electoral Affairs; Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Mines and Petroleum; Energy; Corrective Services; Industrial Relations (representing the Minister for Education; Aboriginal Affairs; Citizenship and Multicultural Interests) also addressed the guests.
Members of the JET Alumni Association of WA (JETAAWA) took this opportunity to make a presentation of their activities, which aim to introduce Japanese culture to people here in WA, and also to encourage more returnees to get involved with their activities. We have high expectations that JETAAWA will have increased its membership, and that they will be able to promote Japan even more in ways that Japanese people cannot, from their own unique perspectives.
We look forward each of the new participants making every effort to promote internationalization at a local level through foreign language education as they take up their postings across all regions of Japan, from Hokkaido in the north, to Kyushu in the south, and including Western Australia’s Sister State Hyogo Prefecture.
