Message from Consul-General Karimata

I am Atsushi Karimata, and I assumed the role of Consul-General of Japan in Perth on April 11, 2025. I am delighted by my new placement to Perth, known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Western Australia is captivating with its beautiful nature, vibrant economy and cultural diversity, and I look forward to my new daily life here.
I will do my utmost to further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Western Australia and Japan. In 2026, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Australia and Japan (NARA Treaty) and we hope to utilise this opportunity to further deepen the friendship between our two countries.
In 2025, Perth will host the FIFA World Cup qualifying match between Japan and Australia in June, as well as the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee Joint Business Conference in October. And with the recent opening of the World Expo 2025 Osaka, we look forward to seeing more Australians visit Japan. I hope events such as these will encourage people-to-people exchange and economic partnerships, further deepening mutual understanding and friendships.
Australia is also an important security partner to Japan and with our common values of the rule of law and democracy, it is necessary for us to further strengthen these ties and deepen cooperations in order to maintain peace and stability in the region. From an economic perspective, Japan and Western Australia have a long history of cooperation in the areas of minerals and energy, however, we are looking to strengthen economic ties in new areas such decarbonisation and critical minerals.
Lastly, I believe it is also my important mission to protect the safety of Japanese citizens, as well as support the work of Japanese companies in Western Australia. I look forward to the opportunity to meet you all and further bridge Japan and Western Australia.
