Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendations 2025 - Awarded to Taiko On

On August 28, the recipients of the 2025 Foreign Minister’s Commendation were announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The commendation was awarded to 173 individuals and 58 groups or organizations worldwide, including the following group from Western Australia: Taiko On.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals or groups in recognition of exceptional and distinguished services in the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and their respective countries. We offer our congratulations and sincere appreciation of the efforts and service of the recipients.
Taiko On was established in 2015, and since this time has made outstanding contributions to the promotion and popularization of wadaiko (Japanese drumming) and Japanese culture in Western Australia through various activities in the community.
The group participates in events not limited to those related to Japan and includes various public performances, school incursions, drumming demonstrations and workshops utilising Japanese instruments and folk songs. The group has also collaborated with the Consulate-General of Japan in Perth on various cultural events.
Additionally, the group incorporates the sounds of the didgeridoo, a traditional Aboriginal instrument, and through their drumming have contributed to the promotion of Japanese culture and the friendly relationship between our two countries.
