Conferment of the Order of Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, upon Mr Arun Radha Krishnan
2024/11/3
On November 3rd, 2024, the Government of Japan announced the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, upon Mr. Arun Radha Krishnan, in recognition of his outstanding contributions in promoting academic exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Australia. The Order is awarded by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.
Mr Krishnan was a pioneer of Japanese Studies in Western Australia who contributed to academic exchange with Japanese Universities and the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and Australia.
Mr Krishnan made an invaluable contribution in establishing a double major Japanese Studies course, with Japanese Economy as well as Japanese Language at the University of Western Australia in the early 1970’s, an Australian first. This was in response to an unprecedented surge in demand in WA for doing business with Japan in mineral resources, which later led to the remarkable economic development of both Japan and Australia.
Since then, a number of prominent leaders in Japanese relations have emerged in Western Australia, having learned under Mr Krishnan. For over 30 years he taught Japanese politics, economics and society at UWA and Murdoch University, and led the establishment and promotion of exchange with Japanese universities.
From his role in establishing the UWA Judo Club and continuing with his current role as Honorary Chairman, Mr Krishnan continues to promote sports exchange, making the club one of the most active and successful Judo clubs in Australia, with a particularly strong exchange model with universities and high schools in Japan.
The Consulate-General of Japan offers its congratulations and sincere appreciation to Mr Arun Radha Krishnan for his exceptional efforts and achievements. His many contributions will continue to benefit the ties of both countries profoundly for many years to come.
