Conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, upon Mr Gerard Charles Boylan

On April 29, 2020 the Government of Japan announced the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, upon Mr Gerard Charles Boylan, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the promotion of inter-regional exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Australia. The Order is awarded by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.

As director and cofounder of the Nichigo Centre, Mr Boylan has played vital role in the community by providing support and guidance to Japanese nationals in Western Australia, while promoting exchange between our two countries to the broader community. His work has also involved the establishment of volunteer driven initiatives including fundraising in response to the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 and Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

Mr Boylan’s devotion to promoting exchange between Australia and Japan is also evident in his active participation in the Australia-Japan Society of Western Australia, serving as President, Vice-President and general committee member, spanning over 20 years of membership. In these roles, Mr Boylan has made outstanding contributions to people-to-people exchange and promotion of Japanese culture and language, establishing the Rieko Ishikawa Award, which is awarded annually to the best Japanese Language Student at each of the four major universities in Western Australia.

The Consulate-General of Japan offers its congratulations and sincere appreciation to Mr Boylan for his exceptional efforts and achievements. His many contributions will continue to benefit the ties of both countries profoundly for many years to come.
