On January 23, a New Year’s Celebration Reception was held jointly with the Japan Chamber of  Commerce and Industry in Perth at the Official Residence of the Consul-General of Japan in Perth. At this year's reception the representative of the Premier of Western Australia, the Hon. Peter Tinley AM MLA, Minister State Housing; Veteran’s Issues; Youth; Asian Engagement, the Hon. Bill Johnston MLA, Minister for Mines and Petroleum; Energy; Industrial Relations, the Hon. Kate Doust MLC, President of the Legislative Council, and the Hon. Dr Mike Nahan MLA, Leader of the Opposition, joined some 120 other distinguished guests from government, business and representatives from Japanese business and the local Japanese communities.
In his welcome address Consul-General Suzuki said he was honoured to have the opportunity to meet with all upon his recent arrival in Perth, and so soon after the announcement of direct flights between Tokyo and Perth at the end of last year. He asserted that these flights will be a fantastic opportunity to raise the relationship between Japan and Western Australia to the next level and that as Consul-General of Japan in Perth he would strive to strengthen that relationship.
Representing the Premier, Minister Tinley not only congratulated Consul-General Suzuki on his appointment but, as Minister for Asian Engagement, said that it is also his important task to further strengthen bilateral relations with Japan. The Leader of the Opposition, Dr Nahan in turn welcomed the Consul-General and affirmed that the high importance of the longstanding Japan/WA relationship had not changed.
After the greetings, the traditional sake barrel opening ceremony was held to celebrate the New Year and was followed by a toast from the acting President of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Perth, Mr Naoki Matsuo.  Guests then enjoyed Japanese dishes including sushi and soba while talking and networking.
