From this beginning, the Consul-General expressed his aim to further deepen Western Australian and Japanese relations. Minister Ellery stated that the Western Australian Government highly valued the relationship with Japan as shown by the visit by Premier McGowan last year as well as increasing student exchanges in her own portfolio of education. Leader of the Opposition, Dr Nahan told the guests that while circumstances surrounding Western Australia may change, the importance of relations with Japan would not change and he referred to the significant opportunities coming from the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement. Following the speeches, a sake barrel opening ceremony was held before President Fukumura of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Perth led the gathering in a toast.
