2017 Emperor’s Birthday Reception
On 23 November, a reception to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan was held at the Consul-General’s Official Residence. Approximately 280 guests attended the celebration, including The Hon. Mark McGowan MLA, Premier of the Western Australia, The Hon. Kate Doust MLC, President of the Legislative Council, The Hon. Colon Barnett MLA, Former Premier, and The Hon. Peter Collier MLC, Shadow Minister for Housing, Disability Services, representing the Leader of the Opposition. Also in attendance, were representatives of the state government and business community, Consular Corps, universities, and Japanese companies, as well as members of the Japanese community in Perth. In his speech, Consul-General Hirayama expressed his deep appreciation of the Premier’s recent visit to Japan and looked back on the year, touching on various points such as the visit to WA by Mr. Iwao Horii, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, sister city/state exchanges between Japan and WA, the conferment of a decoration and the Foreign Minister’s Commendations this year, and the growing Japanese language education in WA. The Consul-General also said that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the Japan-Australia Trade Agreement and the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Consulate-General office in Perth, and that we look forward to continuing our contribution to the betterment of Japan-WA relations. Premier McGowan said that Japan-WA relations are extremely important and his visit to Japan was very meaningful. The Premier also said that his government would work to establish direct flights between Japan and WA, and further strengthen the relationship with Japan. In addition to the displays by Japanese companies, Ikebana and Bonsai, Taiko On performed their Taiko drumming. Both the Japanese and Australian national anthems were performed again this year by a solo vocalist with a quartet of the Western Australia Youth Orchestra. Throughout the course of the evening, many guests enjoyed Japanese cuisine and drinks including Sushi and Sake, enjoying the friendly and pleasant atmosphere.
